I wasn’t sure about this book, 9 Thoughts That Can Change Your Marriage by Sheila Wray Gregoire, when I first got it. It took me forever to read (like almost a year). I felt at that time that my marriage was right where it needed to be, so I wasn’t interested in a book that was going to retell me issues that I had already worked through.
But as the year wore on and life became filled with some rocky roads and unexpected bumps, including getting pregnant with number 5 I picked it up again. I was struggling with myself, with my husband, and I just needed fresh perspective. I knew some of it was me and some of it was him, but I couldn’t exactly pinpoint the areas.
This book hit me right where I needed it.
Instead of letting our thoughts determine our feelings and actions, we can choose to determine what to do with our thoughts. We don’t have to let them bowl us over.- Sheila Wray Gregoire
The author goes through 9 thoughts that can truly change our perspective if we really work on it and think about it. Thoughts like “My husband is my neighbor,” “My husband was not put on this earth to make me happy”, “I can’t mold my husband into my image”, and so many more great thoughts that should change our focus. She sticks action steps in every chapter so if you do need help in an area, you actually know how. (I did try a few and they were quite helpful.)
Your marriage is not about happiness; your marriage is about both of you looking more and more like Jesus every day as you both do what is right.- Sheila Wray Gregoire
Some of the thoughts were tough for me to go through just because it was an area of struggle. (I think there will always be something I need to work on in my relationship, but I feel that it was good to go through it.) To realize, yes, I don’t want to surrender an area or I don’t want to speak up when I see something that might be off, though God has put it on my heart to do so.
I think this book brought everything into perspective and brought God back to the center. This book made me work on the good, the bad, and the in between, but mostly on my own heart and expectations.
I would totally look into this book if you feel you are struggling in your marriage. We all have different times where we just need a fresh perspective with biblical answers. Be inspired today!
I received this book for free from Blogging For Books in exchange for a review. All thoughts are my own.
