If you want a book that talks about Ireland, a new life in America, and yet a call back to Ireland, then this is the book for you. I actually really enjoyed reading Ellis Island because it showed some of the struggles, some of the temptations and some of the victories that come with living in both Ireland and America during the time period this book talks about.
The main character has a hard life with her mother and father, but finds a friend and his family, and eventually, after many years, they are married. Hard times come to them and she finally makes a decision to go to America to get some money for her husband and herself.
The only problem is she starts to enjoy America, but her husband doesn’t want to join her there. So she struggles, asks him to reconsider, and wonders about her future.
She has to make a decision to either stay in America or go back to Ireland.
It was very interesting and showed a lot of history of the time, and what that was like. The ending I thought was just perfect. There was maybe one or two scenes in the whole book that may have been questionable, but not as detailed as most other books and not where I felt I had to put the book down.
So, if your interested, I would recommend it. It might lead to some great conversation with someone else who also may have read it. 🙂
