So we got through our quarter one and have started our quarter two.
I’ve been having a hard time after a bit and so have had to switch up some of the school so we are getting stuff done, but at different times of the week than I had originally planned. With the extra pressure and random contractions, it is hard to stay on top of things.
We have gone through Vikings all the way up to Benjamin Franklin, with great activities and things to make and build, which my kids have enjoyed!
What have we built?
Wigwams and Tepees.
A small Poor Richard’s Alamanac.
Light switch covers.
We’ve colored candles and just so much more.
It’s been a fun first quarter and I can’t wait to make the tricorn hats out of paper just like George Washington wore! (Can you tell I am having as much fun as the kids?)
Another great thing has been the Bible time in the My Father’s World Curriculum because we are just going through the names of Jesus. Jesus, the One who saves. Jesus, the Bread of life. Jesus, the Light of the World. Jesus, Our Rock. I think it really is introducing the kids to Him in such a neat way that I haven’t been fully able to do myself. J
How is math going, you ask? Well, I started a new curriculum this year and found that it works. It’s okay. My son is just lazy because we do more hands on then we do worksheets. And I think him and my daughter are getting a lot out of it that they missed this past year. It is called Right Start Mathematics and is more manipulatives than anything. We have been using an abacus, tiles, our hands, tally (popsicle) sticks and different cards for card games. My kids are big gamers, so they have been learning a lot.
We also use geoboards with rubber bands, and all my kids had a blast just making square and rectangles on those.
Patterns and blocks.
Language arts is still in the works. My daughter loves loves loves workbooks. My son hates them. She will do more pages when asked, and so I am looking at stuff for her. We are mostly following Sonlight at the moment.
My son can do some copywork, but hates writing out words or sentences, but will tell stories or write some of his own words without much effort.
He also enjoys reading some of the books we have on hand and is just a better reader than he was last year. Right now we are rereading some of the books from last year and he is definitely more confident.
So I think I am just pulling out what we have but I am looking at maybe All About Spelling to fit a manipulative slant my kids do have, and to work on phonograms that they still don’t have yet.
Music, we have been going through patriotic songs and I am waiting for a cd from the library about Tchaikovsky. It does music and a biography mixed, so that is exciting. The past couple of weeks we have been working on the song America, where we sing it and learn what the words mean. (Where it came from, too.)
Art and Crafts is mixed in with the My Father’s World, as well as Science.
In Science, we’ve been through rocks and we are going to go through seasons. We’ve talked about volcanoes and outer space and just so many other things! So I feel we have it all covered.
What are you doing if you are homeschooling? Well, I hope you are definitely growing together as a family and really just taking the opportunity to enjoy this time, because it goes fast.
Have a great day!
