Who has time to really exercise? That was my question for the longest time and due to a laziness and a slew of other things, I kept putting it off. I really had no energy for the things I mentioned above, even though I believed that I should do them. I just didn’t believe I would do them well. Because I was lazy, tired…and the numerous other excuses I decided to use.
If you look at the old Trim Healthy Mama book, Serene and Pearl dedicate almost 3 whole chapters just on exercise. It is so far in the book, that you feel like you will never get there, but just look at it for a second if you the book and haven’t been able to. These are the chapters (specifically chapter 36 and 37) that I will be mentioning today. In chapter 36 they kind of go through the research/reason why you should exercise (this was not easy to read for me because it had a lot of scientific facts in one chapter and since I am not fully medically minded, or scientifically minded, my brain shut off at some point). In chapter 37 you get more of the how (which was a lot more interesting, and still had a lot of great facts.
And what do these ladies say?
Starting small is best.
When I first told my husband this, he laughed at me and didn’t believe me! But if you start small, you will slowly gain confidence and know you can do more than just what you are doing. Even when everyone else says it can’t be doing anything for you. Even when you convince yourself it won’t work!
Just like the balance in our S and E plan, we must find this balance for exercise. The thought of having to spend so much time in exercise is such a major deterrent, especially for busy mothers, but finding 15 minutes is easy and lifts the rest of the day. – Trim Healthy Mama
When I read this the first time they asked if you could just dedicate 5 minutes a day to exercising.
Don’t put off exercise, if you can’t find 20 minutes. Just do five minutes if that’s all you got. Once you are five minutes in, you start to get motivated, feel your blood start to pump and you are more inclined to squeeze in another five or ten. – Trim Healthy Mama
I didn’t know where to begin. I realized I needed to, but couldn’t wrap my head around how. Yes, exercising small sounds great, but those burpee push-ups they mention in the book…there was no way I could do those! I tried and totally wanted to give up! It wasn’t even something I wanted to do.
The things that I battled with were
1) My mindset and
2)The know-how. (Or should I say not knowing how?)
So I would keep myself in this vicious cycle. I may try to exercise a small time, but then I would fail and not do it for 3 months or more, then try again. It was always done half-heartedly. I didn’t really want to. I kind of did it more for my husband than for myself.
Within the last year, God started to transform my heart. Finding the want-to in the midst of life.
Having hypothyroidism does not help the process of losing, but I think God was looking to get deeper in my heart to the real issue. Could I discipline myself to do more? Could I strive harder? Could I surrender?
One day I was looking on Youtube and found some great exercises by Alisa Keaton and her company Revelation Fitness. They were 5 minutes each and she encourages you with scriptures along the way about persevering. Her regular one was too much for me, even when I tried to modify it, so I started doing her chair workouts. They were wonderful! Right where I needed them.
After awhile I looked for more (check out some of these previous posts), and would meet up with some other women on Mondays and Thursdays to do a workout at a local church. Those were hard to do, but with each step, each thing I slowly gained, was a stepping stone to getting healthier and having victory.
The last thing I did, and newest thing I have done, was join this person on Facebook who was a coach with Team Beach Body. I wasn’t sure if I should try, but with encouragement from this woman and a close friend having a Slim in 6 video, I decided I should try the first challenge.
I didn’t get very far in it. That first challenge I wasn’t as motivated. The second time around when she started a new challenge, I wanted to accomplish the video set and so moved forward. I committed myself. I am on the last video through this and I know muscle gain has happened! And I actually feel good! Now I am actually considering becoming a coach. That is crazy! I don’t think I ever, (willingly) ever wanted to be one. But it takes growth, God working on your heart, and willingness.
What am I challenging you to do today?
1) Find one video on Youtube, a sheet of exercises (I think I have some on my pinterest page), or whatever you can find! Do 5 minutes of exercise today! And don’t just think today. Whenever you can put them in. Try to do them two times a week. Try three times a week. If you can do five times a week, that would be awesome.
2) Pray for your heart to be willing. If you are like me, you really don’t have motivation. Ask God to help you get some motivation. I promise you, He will provide, just don’t expect a strong wave of motivation each time. The idea is to do something, even if you don’t feel like it.
3) Join a Made to Crave Bible Study (tomorrow we are meeting at 9 am EST but I usually plan for Tuesdays around 3pm EST) or some other study that makes you grow in this area. That helps encourage you and motivate you, inspires you to move beyond yourself.
4) Find others who want to begin this journey or are already on it. One of the most beneficial things I have done this time around was join that workout class at a local church (we just do workout videos) and finding someone who was a coach (which was totally by accident and online by the way!). She invited me, and a bunch of others, to a Facebook page where we were challenged to weigh ourselves, measure ourselves, share when we did our workout, share some of the foods that are helping us along the way, and to even take pictures postwork-out. Again, that first challenge group I wasn’t really as motivated, but as I saw more results, the second challenge group I found I worked harder at it, and am so much stronger and feel so much better because of it.
